Denmark – Wärtsilä will provide its Wärtsilä HY Module, a containerised hybrid battery power and energy storage system, to Maersk Supply Service, a Danish provider of offshore marine services.
The Wärtsilä system will help Maersk achieve its aim of reducing the carbon intensity of its fleet by half by the end of this decade.
Hybrid power for Maersk Minder
The hybrid power conversion will take place on the Maersk Minder, an anchor handling tug supply (AHTS) vessel, in early 2022. This is thought to be the first AHTS hybrid battery conversion in the world. The Wärtsilä HY system is expected to reduce fuel usage and, consequently, carbon emissions by 15%. The upgrade will help minimize the vessel’s maintenance needs while improving its operational performance.
Wärtsilä’s scope
The hybrid drive, energy storage system (ESS), and transformer are the three primary system components. The energy management system is in charge of controlling and monitoring the hybrid system (EMS). By running the engines at optimal load and using the batteries to absorb a considerable part of the load changes, the system achieves peak shaving, spinning reserve, and significant efficiency increase.
Wärtsilä also provided the entire engine room scope for this vessel, including the engines, thrusters, propeller arrangement, seals and bearings, and integrated automated and planned maintenance systems.
