Norway/India – Equinor and Deepak Fertilisers, a prominent player in the Indian fertiliser and petrochemical sector, have inked a 5-year agreement for the supply of liquefied natural gas (LNG), set to start in 2026.

The primary goal of the agreement is to ensure a reliable and sustainable supply of LNG to Deepak Fertilisers, thereby supporting the expansion of its operations in the fertiliser and petrochemical sectors. Equinor’s LNG portfolio, comprising supplies from its Hammerfest LNG Plant in Norway and sourced mainly from the US, serves as the cornerstone of the agreement.

Deepak Fertilisers will utilize LNG primarily as a feedstock for the production of ammonia, a vital component in fertilisers and essential for sustaining agriculture and food security. The adoption of LNG technology underscores a commitment to eco-friendly and efficient manufacturing processes, aligning with global sustainability objectives.

Transformative change

The partnership holds the potential to catalyze transformative change across multiple sectors, including agriculture, petrochemicals, and energy. By securing a stable supply of LNG, Deepak Fertilisers can strengthen its value chain, improve production efficiency, and contribute to the nation’s self-reliance in critical sectors.

Beyond LNG supply, the partners aim to explore opportunities for joint initiatives in areas such as petrochemical feedstocks, carbon footprint reduction, and low-carbon ammonia production.
