Norway – For the green hydrogen production facility at Rjukan, in Eastern Norway, Innovation Norway has provided grants and loans of up to NOK 135 million to Aker Horizons Asset Development, the company’s wholly-owned asset development arm specifically focused to hydrogen projects.
Under specific conditions, the Rjukan project will receive up to NOK 85 million in grants and up to NOK 50 million in green growth loans from Innovation Norway, the main tool used by the Norwegian government to stimulate innovation and development in Norwegian businesses and industry.
Rjukan project
With a 20 MW electrolyser capacity, the Rjukan plant will be able to produce about 9 tonnes of green hydrogen per day. The initiative seeks to be an early industry mover in the generation of green hydrogen and has acquired the site’s existing infrastructure, industrial area, and hydropower resources.
Aker Horizons will ship compressed hydrogen from Rjukan to Eastern Norway’s industry, shipping, and mobility customers. The pre-FEED for the project’s civil works was just finished by the company, and the application process for permits is now under way. The project’s partnership negotiations are going well, and Aker Horizons has obtained a letter of intent for a significant portion of the offtake for Rjukan.
By the end of 2023, Aker Horizons intends to make a final investment decision for Rjukan, with a projected commercial operating date of 2025.
Environmentally friendly hydrogen
The Norwegian Government’s Green Industrial Initiative roadmap, which was unveiled in June 2022, includes a significant section on the creation of a value chain for the environmentally friendly production, distribution, and use of hydrogen produced with no or minimal emissions.
