The Netherlands – The Heracless-Groen Staal plan may be initiated by Tata Steel in IJmuiden, following the approval that was granted by the Province of North Holland.
The plan states that Tata Steel aims to quit utilising coal and close its gas facilities, coke, and blast furnaces. By 2045, the business plans be carbon neutral.
Tata Steel hopes to close Hoogoven 7 and Kooks-en Gasfabriek 2 by 2030 and have the first “green steel” installations operational by that time (KGF2). In IJmuiden, half of the total steel production would then be produced more sustainably than it is now. Hoogoven 6 and the Kooks-en Gasfabriek 1 must also be replaced by new green factories during the second phase, which will take place around 2035. In manufacturing, the Direct Reduced Iron technique is used. Tata Steel would use natural gas first before switching to hydrogen.
Procedures
The North Holland province has officially granted the go-ahead to begin the processes for these initiatives. Combining DRI technology with electric pig iron furnaces is the first stage in environmentally friendly steel mill transformation. On the Tata Steel property, new installations will be constructed.
The business has begun the process of seeking for permits. An Environmental Impact Report (EIA) is created while the application for permits is being prepared. Local residents and interested parties can give their opinion on Tata Steel’s plans.
