The Netherlands – Elogen, a GTT group subsidiary, has signed a contract with CrossWind, a Shell and Eneco joint venture for the construction of the Hollandse Kust Noord (HKN) offshore wind project, to design and produce a 2.5 MW Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) electrolyzer.

The project will begin with an engineering phase, then go on to fabrication and topside integration. Elogen’s PEM electrolyser will be built offshore in 2025, off the coast of the Netherlands, and will convert on-site electricity into green hydrogen, allowing the project greater flexibility to adjust to changes in power output.

Storing energy

The HKN offshore wind project places a heavy emphasis on innovation, with the goal of storing energy during periods of high renewable energy generation and releasing it during periods of low generation. A hydrogen production unit will be constructed on site to manufacture and store hydrogen and convert it back to electricity when needed, as one of the five major breakthroughs identified by CrossWind to address the difficulty of the intermittency inherent in renewable energy.
