Denmark – TotalEnergies has been granted two licenses to investigate the possibility for CO2 storage in the Danish North Sea.
The licenses span a 2,118 km2 region and are situated 250 km off Denmark’s west coast.
The acreage includes the Harald gas fields, which TotalEnergies currently manages, as well as a saline aquifer that could increase CO2 storage volumes and provide a competitive solution to the market. The company is already evaluating CO2 storage opportunities for these fields as part of the Bifrost project.
Operatorship
Future operators of the offshore CO2 storage permits will be TotalEnergies (80%) and the state-owned Nordsfonden (20%). By reusing existing infrastructure in the Danish North Sea and constructing new facilities, the company will carry out evaluation and appraisal work to design a project that could ultimately transport and permanently store more than 5 Mt CO2/year.
