Finland – Flexens and KIP Infra want to establish Finland’s “largest” hydrogen production plant in Kokkola, with plans to construct a 300MW facility there.

The partners have signed a Letter of Intent (LoI) for a land lease in the Kokkola Industrial Park area, where they seek to create capacity for the production of “mainly green” hydrogen and ammonia.

According to the Finnish pair, the plant would be a major step forward for the country’s hydrogen industry, which would be used to meet energy needs and ensure self-sufficient fertilizer production. The start of production is anticipated by the end of 2027.

According to Flexen, Gasgrid Finland will assist it in determining the project’s development requirements for local, regional, and national hydrogen infrastructure.

Finnish govt support

Additionally, the Nordic Hydrogen Route Bothnian Bay project, which aims to construct a 1,000 km hydrogen transmission network around the Bothnian Bay and Bothnian Gulf by 2030, has partnered with Swedish company Nordion Energi, the Kokkola project.

The expected project has received support from the Finnish government, with Minister of Economic Affairs Mika LintilƤ claiming that Kokkola is the perfect location for hydrogen initiatives.
