Germany – The state of Baden-Wuerttemberg has provided financing to Optima Life Science for the test converter, which will be used to develop and evaluate novel fuel cell production techniques.

Manufacturing process development and improvement are highly necessary. Only for this use is the OPTIMA MTC (Modular Test Converter) intended. It is possible to test individual processes as well as intricate process sequences all the way up to the finished MEA or fuel cell.

“Future Program Hydrogen BW” funding

The state of Baden-Wuerttemberg provided financing to Optima in order to fully utilize the capabilities of production techniques and to foster the quick development of this future technology. Since the start of 2022, 20 projects utilizing hydrogen and fuel cell technology have received funding from the Ministry of the Environment, Climate Protection, and the Energy Sector as part of the “Future Program Hydrogen BW.” The state government is contributing budgeted money of 26.4 million Euros for the development of this technology.

Complex procedures

The membrane electrode assembly is the brains of the fuel cell. In an electrochemical reaction, hydrogen and oxygen are present, and electrical energy and water are created. In Optima systems, the roll is used to feed each of the different components, such as membranes, frame material, and gas diffusion layers.

In the intricate, continuous web process, individual elements are sized appropriately and combined into the MEA. All phases in the process must be carried out with the utmost accuracy for the fuel cells to operate at the optimum degree of efficiency. With its digital solutions, Optima enables the traceability of each individual MEA in addition to the manufacturing technologies needed for MEA production.
