The Netherlands – Windcat Workboats has received the first hydrogen bunker permit in the port of IJmuiden, allowing them to bunker the Hydrocat 48 with hydrogen for the first time.
Shipping has taken a major step toward sustainability with the introduction of hydrogen bunkering at the ports of IJmuiden and Amsterdam. Using hydrogen as fuel helps North Holland move closer to its goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2050.
Windcat Workboats, the IJmond Environment Agency, Zeehaven IJmuiden N.V., and the Port of Amsterdam looked into what would be necessary to allow hydrogen bunkering. On behalf of the city of Velsen, the IJmond Environment Agency has issued an environmental permit for this work.
Hydrocat 48 vessel
Crew members who work on offshore wind farms are transported there and back using the Hydrocat 48. The pilot with bunkering hydrogen was finished in the IJmondhaven while the ship was in IJmuiden. It will then set sail from Ostend to perform its regular operations, which include servicing the 44 Vestas turbines that make up the Belgian wind farm Norther.
