Norway – The ownership structure of HEGRA, a joint venture between Yara, Aker Clean Hydrogen, and Statkraft, has changed.

HEGRA was formed in 2021 as a partnership between Yara, Aker Clean Hydrogen, and Statkraft with the goal of electrifying Yara’s ammonia plant in Herøya, Norway, and removing 800,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually.

Ownership structure

Over the last year, an integrated team has worked together to mature the project in its early stages. HEGRA is feasible, according to a recently completed feasibility study, but there is no basis for continuing the project under the current ownership structure for commercial or strategic reasons. Yara will continue to work on HEGRA without the participation of Aker Clean Hydrogen and Statkraft.

Each company will continue to promote hydrogen production and demand in Norway and around the world, and they are still open to collaborating on certain aspects of the value chain.

Statkraft and Aker Horizons will work together to develop more green hydrogen and ammonia projects in the future.
