France – RTE has awarded Nexans a €100 million contract to supply and install 47 kilometres of offshore and 18 kilometres of onshore power export cable for a wind farm in the English Channel.

To put it another way, the wind farm’s 496 MW capacity is enough to power 850,000 people, or about two-thirds of the population of Seine-Maritime and more than the entire Somme region, on an annual basis.

Laying cables

The “Éoliennes en Mer Dieppe Le Tréport” consortium has developed one of France’s largest commercial offshore wind projects. 225 kV three-core cable in lengths of 23.5 km will be provided by Nexans for the subsea section. One of the Group’s two cable laying vessels, the CS Skagerrak and the newly constructed Aurora, will be responsible for laying the cables.

225 kV single-core cable will be used for the onshore link, similar to Nexans’ current contract with RTE for onshore cables. For the onshore section, Nexans will be responsible for cable burial and protection.

It will be manufactured at Nexans’ Halden plant in Norway, while the land cables will be manufactured at the Charleroi plant in Belgium. The Rognan, Norway, facility will provide the fiber optic components. The subsea cable installation is expected to begin in the second half of 2024 at the earliest.
