Australia – The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) is awarding $100 million in grants to large-scale battery energy storage projects with a capacity of 70MW or more that will provide essential grid system stability services.
The funding will go toward at least three projects, each with a maximum grant of $35 million, and will be open to all battery energy storage technologies that use advanced inverters.
The funding round will encourage private sector investment and help to overcome barriers to large-scale deployment of advanced inverter technology, which can help to secure our grid as renewables continue to grow.
Angus Taylor, the Morrison Government’s Minister for Industry, Energy and Emissions Reduction, said the Morrison Government is working with the private sector to identify and support energy storage projects that will help Australia maintain its record levels of renewable energy.
Since 2017, the Australian government has funded six large-scale batteries through the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA), including the Energy Storage for Commercial Renewable Integration (ESCRI) project in South Australia, which is the country’s largest battery using advanced inverter technology.

These projects will help Australia achieve net zero emissions by 2050 while preserving industry sectors and establishing Australia as a leader in low-emissions technologies, as part of the country’s whole-of-economy Long-Term Emissions Reduction Plan.
